I wasn't planning on another SPN post this week, but we're at such an interesting juncture I couldn't resist.

Schrodinger's Cat meets the Supernatural Fandom
More so than with any previous cliffhanger episodes, I feel like we're all holding our breath for this week's finale. Anything could happen, and for this one week in particular there's such a wide field of potential ways the story could go stemming from those final few moments of last Thursday - all of which will collapse down to "what actually happens" in canon this Thursday. It reminds me of the Schroedinger's Cat thought experiment in quantum physics: different realities are possible (a cat may be alive or dead in a box) until they are viewed (someone opens the box), and then they all "collapse" into one reality that actually does happen.*

*Yes, I know this is a massive oversimplification. But I assume most of you don't actually care for a detailed explanation of the quantum mechanical concept of superposition. If you do, let me know and I'm happy to blather on about my layman's understanding. Or you can check out its entry in Wikipedia - or The Straight Dope's explanation of Schroedinger's Cat which is probably a better idea than listening to me. :)

That's why I was so excited to discover the community [livejournal.com profile] spn_standstill. We have so many different people's interpretations of those final moments of 2x21 - right before, during, or after - collected in one location, all sitting shoulder-to-shoulder. And anything is fair game. By the end of Thursday evening canon will be set, and we will all be in a different place collectively. We can all still write "what if"s of these moments after Thursday, of course - but it's different with the weight of canon now present.

I suppose this happens with episodes all the time, and I'm just unusually aware of it this time - so much so that I actually wrote a coda for the first time. Anyway, it's a really interesting space, so I just wanted to acknowledge it publicly before Thursday.

Yes, Audrey and I are still on crack
Speaking of codas, [livejournal.com profile] audreyovisual amused me a great deal this morning by doing the Zombie!Sam Shuffle and bumping into things (hurting her right shoulder a bit in the process, and she's never even seen SPN 2x21 *insert Twilight Zone music here*). I couldn't stop giggling. And then my flailing began.

As a result, we were talking about how the whole fandom was "flailing in a sea of angst" this week, which brought SEA ANEMONES instantly to mind for us both, with little (Finding N)emo faces upturned and hands slowly moving back and forth in a rhythmic undulation.

Needless to say, a drawing was clearly required, and since I can't draw I browbeat prevailed upon Audrey. Thus I present to you

EMONEMONES!

\o/ Audrey is awesomeness itself. One day you guys will meet and the universe will explode or something from the vortex of creative energy, I swear.

I know, this week is just...GAH. So difficult and so good at the same time. We're all such masochists, aren't we? *grin*

You are fucking killing me here. Deeeeeen. Their little faces all anemone-like. Poor dears. I gotta say though, I hear the words 'quantum physics' and my eyes glaze. I gotta get past that, truly. A2 says it's the same with "insurance industry" (one of his areas of study, being a criminologist) -- "These assholes are ripping you off blind," he says, "And just the word 'insurance' makes most people fall asleep. We need to rise up!" So yeah. The things that make him crazy (don't get him going on the auto industry either...just scary).

*g* So glad you liked!

Actually, the concept really is pretty cool. Bizarre, actually, and the idea that the cold hard world is actually like this on a fundamental level just blows my mind. It's worth learning about.

Aaaand now I'm just curious about insurance...

Shall I direct you to one of the three books he's written about the insurance industry? Luckily, he's real cute and can talk about the tv show COPS just about the same amount (also, now, I'm not kidding you, treeplanters AND cirque performers).

I must not be terrified of the words 'quantum physics'. Must say it a hundred times and maybe I'll be okay.

I can't help it, I love the crack! I NEED the crack! I stagger like a drunk (or zombie!Sam) without the crack (or enough coffee).

And [livejournal.com profile] dendritejungle did not merely browbeat me. She wailed on me like a riot cop on PCP. So of course I had to take a pencil in my sweaty and shaking hands and draw before she started in again.

All because she promised me the CRACK.

She's EVOL, and don't you forget it.

Oh god, you and me both. *rolls in the crack* *revels in the crack*

HEY! If memory serves it was rather more begging and pleading and exhortations than physical abuse, thank you.

But yeah, still totally evol. ;P

Oh, all right, it was a cheap attempt to deny the fact that I just caved, like a big wuss, to begging and puppy eyes.

*blush*

Sorry for tarnishing your reputation.

I'll make a correction, then... "She wailed on me like a Yorkie puppy who wanted a cookie"

You're welcome :P

Schroedinger's Cat always makes me think of Douglas Adams and Dirk Gently's Holistic Detective Agency. :)

*tries to think whether she has anything relevant to say or is just commenting for the sake of it*

Yeah, the last one. :P

That's me in the back, with my hand smacked to my forehead. (Sob!) Why is this week so friggin' long, anyway? And since I'm going to the Upfronts Thursday, that's going to be a long-assed day, too! Robin

Hee! I think I'm the one in the front with the hands to cheeks.

Why is this week so friggin' long, anyway?

I know, it's KILLING ME! And ooh, you're GOING to the Upfronts? *is officially jealous* If it were next Thursday, I would ask if I could join you - I'll be in the Big Apple for a trade show next week, and have that day to toodle around the city.

(You so have to post about your Upfront experiences!)
