As I'm sitting here at work trying to force down a salad made of the random collection of ingredients I grabbed as I was rushing out the door this morning - baby spinach, chickpeas, red pepper, apple and goat cheese - I am thinking a few things.

Firstly, I am thinking that I do not want to be eating salad. I am cold. I want something warm and hearty. Never mind that this is actually a fairly decent salad, it is Not What I Want at this juncture.

(Then I am glad that I have food at all. Particularly this rather nice stuff. So that's all right.)

Secondly, I am thinking that I picked the wrong fork. This one is too thin, and the chickpeas keep rolling off it. It's feeling rather Sisyphean.

Thirdly, I am recalling that I really suck at salad tossing. Half of my greens always end up speared on my fork, the other half making a break for it outside the bowl, and all the yummy stuff which was so recently and prettily sitting on top of my greens are now sitting in a sad pile at the bottom of the bowl.

Fourthly, I am recalling that my dad is an extremely good salad-tosser, and indeed salad-maker, and one of the reasons that I avoided leafy-type salad for yeeears (though fruit, pasta or bean salads, for instance, were all fine) is that we had a salad - or The Salad, if you will, as the ingredients and dressing were virtually unchanged over time - about three to five times a week, every week, for a good fifteen of my early years lived at home. And that when I moved out, it was a long, long time before I ate a leafy salad.

Fifthly, I am thinking that lettuce is a waste of perfectly good chlorophyll. And I am glad I am eating spinach instead.

Sixthly, I am thinking that perhaps I was a tad over-ambitious in my use of half a can of chickpeas for this salad. They are beginning to feel rather endless. And I amusing myself with the term "garbanzo beans." Does anyone actually call chickpeas garbanzo beans?

This is what I am thinking.
